Do I need to aerate my lawn?
Over time and from constant use, the soil under your grass gets compacted. When soil gets compacted, it is more difficult for your grass to develop deeper root system and access air, water, and minerals that are essential for its growth. Compacted soil also negatively affects presence of beneficial soil organisms that help keep your soil healthy.
Core aeration helps loosen the soil by removing soil plugs allowing for air, water, & minerals to be available for your lawn and other beneficial soil organisms.
If your soil gets a lot of foot traffic, you may want to consider getting this done. The best way to know is by getting a core sample of the lawn. If grass roots extend only to the first 2 inches, your soil may benefit from core aeration.
When should I aerate my lawn?
The best time to aerate lawns in Calgary is between May to June and in October before winter sets in.
Getting this done in the spring will help your lawn reap its benefits during its growing season and allowing it to recover from the procedure. In the fall, this procedure allows for your lawn to winterize better after all the use it has experienced during the summer months.
Do you remove the soil plugs after aeration?
No, we don't. The soil plugs are best left on the lawn so they can be reabsorbed.
When done in the spring, along with our cleanup service, all the plugs get broken down during power raking, leaving a ready-to-use lawn after our service.
When done in the fall, the plugs get broken down by the freeze-thaw events that we get during the winter months.
What is power raking?
"Power raking" or dethatching is a process of removing thatch - a dense mat of stems and roots which accumulate under the surface of your lawn.
A little thatch (about 50% of your grass height) is good for your lawn and acts as cushion so your lawn can withstand foot traffic. However, too much thatch accumulation can prevent air, water, & minerals from reaching your soil. It also becomes a good habitat for pests and diseases that can prevent you from having a green & healthy lawn.
When should I get power raking done?
Power raking is a very aggresive procedure that can be hard on your lawn if done in the wrong time of the year. It is best to power rake in the spring while your lawn is still dormant to avoid too much damage and allow your lawn to reap its benefits as soon is it is awake from the long winter.
